Durian candy poisons 1,909 in Surigao

Caraga Region - from only a few hundred victims, mostly students, to have been reported, it has raised to 1,909 as of 11 p.m. according to Caraga regional director Jose Llacuna.



Gov. Johnny Pimentel announced that most of the hospitalized victims have been discharged yesterday morning.  Meanwhile, a banning of vendors from school premises as the results of an investigation into the incident have yet to be released.

The candies (Wendy’s Durian Candy) were reportedly manufactured in Davao City and charges have been filed against it's manufacturer  after records showed that the candy is not registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In line with this, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte suspended yesterday the candy manufacturer’s business permit.

The Philippine National Police formed a task group that would conduct a deeper probe of the durian candy poisoning incident and samples of the candies have been sent for laboratory examination. Police have yet to determine whether the candies were expired or laced with poison.
