December 30 is considered as a local holiday observed in the entire Philippines as Rizal Day is being celebrated.
This is to commemorate the death anniversary of José Rizal, Philippine’s National Hero.
But the said special day for our hero seems to be taken for granted as it falls between Christmas (which Filipinos usually have a long Christmas vacation) and New Year celebration, so he does not get the attention that we would want our national hero Jose Rizal to have.
With this, Ambeth Ocampo of National Historical Institute (NHI) proposed to move the observance of Rizal Day from December 30 to June 19, which is the birthday of Rizal.
