The provisional fare increase was announced by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) last Sunday which will take effect today, Wednesday.
Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza said the fare increases had been approved by the Cabinet during a meeting Tuesday with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Panglao, Bohol.
Officially, the new rates were to take effect starting 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, May 21. Taxis are not included in the approved increases.
Under the new setup, the fare for jeepneys in Metro Manila and Regions III and IV is increased to P8 from P7.50 for the first four kilometers.
The minimum fare for ordinary buses is raised to P9 from P8 while the minimum fare for air-conditioned buses goes up to P11.50 from P10.
There will be no increase in the rates for every succeeding kilometer for both Metro Manila jeeps and buses.
For provincial routes, ordinary buses will add P0.10 per kilometer while air-conditioned buses will charge P0.25 more per kilometer.
