January 1 is the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.
This feast is the celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and is the oldest feast of Mary celebrated by the Catholic Church.

In many countries, this celebration is considered as a holy day of obligation.

Insight: That is why we go to Mass every New Year or New Year’s eve… not because of New Year, but because of Mary. It is very timely that after Christmas, the birth of Jesus, we do not forget Mary as His mother, and our Mother too, and at the beginning of the year, we entrust ourselves to Mama’s care - She would pray for us and keep us from harm for the rest of the year. God Bless!
