In my post about the Best Place to put Adsense or other advertisement I have posted there an illustration or heat map which shows where Google ads usually perform best.
Now, here is another heat map from Google illustrating the place where ads usually perfrom best in a forum.
According to Google help center, instead of placing your ad directly below your logo, it is better to place it above or blow that first post where users would easily notice.
Placing a leaderboard ad immediately after the last post is also effective most especially to users who tend to reach the end of the thread.
As for the format, Google help center suggests using a variety of formats to fill ad space throughout your site. The heat map above gives you a better idea of the placement and the format to use to each part of your forum.
